In 2006, an average of 61% of Poland's population was connected to a wastewater treatment plant. The Zywiec region in southern Poland has been catching up immensely since 2007 - thanks to European funding pots - and will reach similar connection rates as in Germany (95%) in the future. Pentair Jung Pumpen supplies the wastewater pump technology.

Environmental protection and quality of life for approx. 180,000 inhabitants
The "Żywiec Wastewater Treatment" project is one of the largest sewerage and water supply projects in Poland. Responsible for the entire project is an association of environmental municipalities in the region based in the city of Żywiec. The construction of the new sewerage network and water pipes affects a total of 11 municipalities. According to the project's specifications, 1,231 km of the sewerage network will be newly constructed.

The project is largely supported by financial means from the European fund. The total costs amount to approximately 210 million euros. After completion of the project, about 95% of the population from the municipalities will be connected to the sewerage network. The municipalities are located in the Beskid Mountains, a popular part of Poland with highly developed tourism. The town of Żywiec is also home to Poland's best-known brewery "Żywiec". Clean water is a top priority here.

Jung Pumpen supports with pump know-how
Pentair Water Polska was awarded the contract to implement the project for the municipalities of Jeleśnia, Żywiec, Koszarawa, Lipowa, Górka, Wieprz, Rajcza and Gilowice in a tendering process. To date, 92 collection pumping stations with MultiStream wastewater pumps and 139 PKS pressure drainage manholes with MultiCut cutter pumps have already been installed. Further pumping stations are in the planning stage.

The pump technology
In pressure drainage, small house pumping stations convey the wastewater of individual houses or groups of houses into a pressure pipe network. Compared to drainage via gravity sewers, this is a much more cost-effective and environmentally friendly option. Due to the small-dimensioned pressure pipes, only minimal intervention in the terrain is necessary, which benefits both the environment and the budget. In the Zywiec region, buoyancy-proof polyethylene sewage pumping stations were used, including the MultiCut sewage pumps with cutter and the complete control system. The pressure pipes end in a gravity sewer or directly at the treatment plant.

In order to reliably transport the wastewater in the sewer towards the treatment plant, it has to be lifted again and again on the way there - in order to then flow off in the freefall. For this purpose, high-quality polymer concrete sumps were used, which are particularly durable and resistant to corrosion. Duplex pump installations with MultiStream single-channel impeller in a power range from 1 to 7.5 kW create sufficient safety and have good efficiency with little risk of blockage.
